Hangar visit two-fer.

Gale Partch has been working on his RV for over a decade, the project has been moved to another house and is on it's second engine. At last it's at an airport hangar. It's getting close. The other airplane to look at is Chuck Hosack's Zenith 750 that has been flying.

Matt's hangar is on the east side of Birchwood airport. When you get close to the hagars, take the road to the left. After the hangars there is some wide open spaces, then a bunch of super cubs. Matt's hangar is just beyond the Super Cubs. Don't go up the hill.

Congrats to Gale, Bob and Rob for jobs well done!
Not only did Gale work very hard on his own airplane, he also spent countless hours assisting others on their homebuilt projects. Many friends and Chapter 42 members contributed to the successful completion of Gale's RV-6 but Chuck Hosack, Mark Barker and Jonathan Fant worked tirelessly on the final completion steps. Without their expertise and unselfish dedication, the plane might well be a couple more years in the hangar. Although there are too many more to list, we would like to point out that Burke Wicke's, and Tom Lawhorn's help and experience in the last stages of the build were extremely valuable.

Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF)

At August's Board Meeting, Al Clayton gave a short presentation regarding the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF).
http://theraf.org/
Al has volunteered to be the Alaska liaison for the RAF. The Recreational Aviation Foundation preserves, maintains, and creates airstrips for recreational access. Al thanked chapter 42 for our efforts in the past to maintain airstrips in the Wrangell St. Elias park (those efforts were spearheaded by past president Matt Freeman) and to alert us to a Wrangell St. Elias master plan revision that is in process. While not a threat at this time, constant vigilance is needed.

You can read more and comment here:
National Park Service - PEPC - Backcountry and Wilderness Stewardship Plan and GMP Amendment
https://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectID=44299

Those inclined to comment might mention EAA chapter 42's history of hands on cooperation with the Park Service with maintenance of some of the remote strip and interest in linking arms with other general aviation groups (like the Recreational Aviation Foundation) for possible future cooperation.

John Nealon's Highlander with a Viking Engine

Our September 27th meeting was at John Nealon's house in Wasilla to look at his Just Highlander project with a Viking engine. It has been covered with Stewart Systems.

John's plane is the Just Aircraft Highlander, not to be confused with the Just Aircraft SuperStol. The SuperStol is the model that places in the top 5 at the Valdez STOL competition. It's designed to make something more like an aircraft carrier style arrival than a landing. Nose way high, power on, when the tail wheel hits, cut the power.

John would like to put the Highlander on floats, where the STOL style arrivals are not recommended.
